Touring History

Many long-term residents of Hong Kong know very little of our history other than the fact that it was once part of the British Empire. To give some of our poorest residents and new arrivals the opportunity to learn more than that we took them on a tour!

The families enjoyed the
experience of hearing about the
historic sites

Last month we took 34 underprivileged people from one of our poorest districts, Kwun Tong, on a tour of some of our local history. The outing was hosted by our Sau Mau Ping Centre and sponsored by Kwun Tong District Council.

We went to Tai Po district where they learned about the history of various clans in Hong Kong, and then they visited the Lung Yeuk Tau (Mountain of the Leaping Dragon) Heritage site, which is home to the Five Wais (walled villages) and Six Tsuens (villages) of the Tang Clan. The rest of the day was a scenic journey into the history of the Tang Clan, with many iconic stops along the way.

These families rarely, if ever, get to spend time in the New Territories, and also spend time together as a family. This last point is so important. At Christian Action we know about the tensions that can arise between family members when money is short and living conditions are miserable, so we will continue to offer these unfortunate people time out of their crowded dwellings and give them the enjoyment of enjoying an outing together.
