Living Life to the Fullest
“He is the most curious, confident, and brightest boy you may ever meet. And he is the only person in China who has dared, and cared enough, to correct my bad Mandarin!”
I wrote those words in October, 2010 to describe seven-year-old Caleb. In 2003, he began living in Xining Children’s Home. He positively radiated joy and captured the hearts of everyone with whom he came in contact. Fast forward to 2021: Angie, Caleb’s adoptive Mom in the US, tells me he is now 18 years old and is really flourishing.
He continues to be positive, and charges ahead in life. Here are some of his many accomplishments -
- He is on the verge of getting his driver’s license
- He leverages his experience with spina bifida, and being in crutches, to not only help the special-need kids, but also their families who attend his church’s respite programme
- He is an inspiration to Angie’s latest foster son, who is confined to a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy.
- He’s also a volunteer with the church’s pre-school classes and Bible summer school.
- He is on track for a Black Belt in karate - weapons replace kicking!
- In 2019, Angie, Caleb, and his brother Joshua, joined a mission trip to Guatemala. They served in poverty-stricken villages, including one that is located in the shadow of an active volcano!
Angie said, “It was quite the adventure to navigate primitive conditions with his medical needs. The locals were amazed by his tremendous efforts in bringing the love of Christ to them. I am so glad we were able to do it.”
Caleb hasn’t decided what he’ll do when he graduates from high school, but he has expressed an interest in returning to Xining Children’s Home and helping Christian Action after he graduates from college. How wonderful to see all God has done in this young man’s life!
