Neighbourly Care Network
This is the story of Yue Chang, the needs that she saw in the neighborhood she had just moved into, and how she sprang into action.
“An elderly gentleman in the neighbourhood needed surgery. His relationship with his family members had deteriorated and he felt depressed and alone. On hearing this, I took the initiative to visit him and to assure him that he wasn’t alone and that help was close by.
Eventually the old man passed away. His absence made me realise the importance of volunteer work. The experience taught me that all of us can bring blessings and neighbourly care to those who feel abandoned and lonely. Through reaching out to the elderly, I have learned to cherish each individual who crosses my path.
Whenever I can, I will help the elderly. I’ll phone them and ask about their needs or go shopping for them and deliver their groceries. It is also important to let them just talk about their feelings. I wish more people would be willing to spend 10 or 20 minutes to listen to their stories, to bring this simple neighbourhood care to them”.
Are you aware of people around you who are in need? Or perhaps you want to be of service to others but you just don’t personally know someone who is house-bound, lonely or are just confused about how to cope in the midst of this pandemic? We would love to help you be a blessing to others. Please click here to volunteer.
Thank you, Siew Mei
