Unity in Diversity
“I am so glad I signed up for this tour. Having now spent a good part of today with members of some of Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities I have gained a deeper appreciation for how hard inclusion is for them. Whether they are new immigrants or existing members of an ethnic minority, we should all show more tolerance towards them.” - NWS participant Daisy Wong
Hong Kong’s non-Chinese ethnic minorities are a vibrant and colourful part of our community. To help celebrate this diversity and promote social cohesion Christian Action organizes Ethnic Minority (EM) Walks!
Last month for example, we hosted a walk for staff from our partner company NWS Holdings. The tour included Chungking Mansions, the Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre, and Bowring Shopping Mall - all places that most participants had never visited!
The first stop was our newly renovated Centre for Refugees in Chung King Mansions, which is a ‘home away from home’ for so many Africans and South Asians. Our Refugee clients briefed NWS Holdings staff and educated them about differences in ethnic minorities’ cultures and the multitude of challenges they face in Hong Kong.
One highlight of the Chung King Mansions trip was the gastronomic tour of the many little hidden-away Indian and Middle Eastern, to Chinese Thai and African restaurants!
Next was the Kowloon Mosque and Islamic Centre. The group was greeted by an Imam, who gave them a detailed history of the Mosque and explained how Muslims observe different festivals and practice their religion. It was an eye-opener for everyone since no one had ever visited the inside of a mosque.
Christian Action hosts Ethnic Minority Walking tours to help us learn from and respect different cultures and strengthen social cohesion. In diversity, we find unity and harmony. I would like to invite everyone to join our EM Walk. Individual or group tours are available.
