Where Does My Help Come From?
"This relieved the stress of tutoring my daughter and answered my questions about secondary education. My daughter eagerly anticipated every tutorial. Her happiness is my happiness too." Mrs Yip, On Tai Estates resident
Picture, if you can, a young girl confined to a minuscule, overcrowded apartment in the new On Tai public housing estate in Kwun Tong. She is desperate to break free and move ahead. To learn and to grow. But family finances prevent it. Where does her help come from?
Now picture, if you can, her mother. Yes, money is tight, but her greatest agony and heartache comes from her inability to help her daughter complete her homework, get ahead at school and thereby break free from poverty. All because she too, is largely uneducated. Where does her help come from?
There is good news. This past summer Christian Action’s Lo Kwee Seong On Tai Service Centre brought help to the children and parents at On Tai Estates courtesy of a partnership with Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong!
On Tai Estates is a severely under-resourced community. Job losses, rampant insomnia and depression brought about by COVID and the tremendous overcrowding, is commonplace. Christian Action is the only well-established NGO serving On Tai district.
The programs targeted Primary 4-6th grade students and their parents. Twice a month, from May to November, a series of two-hour workshops and talks were held for parents. Topics included: parenting skills, how to improve children’s study motivation; tips for choosing secondary schools and more. The children received an entire range of activities and classes.
"Every tutor taught me with great patience but I especially wanted to thank Mr. Ma. He helped my studies take a great leap forward. I made new friends and they helped me with my homework and, when I felt anxious, depressed and helpless. I’m really thankful for all of you. I’m really honoured to be part of the program. It has improved my academic results and given me many friends. So I am very happy." - Lo in Primary School
In ancient times the Psalmist asked: “I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from?” And then, seeing beyond the immediate problems, he answered his own question: “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)
I am grateful that in partnership with you, we can offer all these needs up to God in prayer - and be God’s hands by helping those in need. Please donate to support our services for children and families. Thank you and God bless you!
