‘Someday’ Starts Today.
‘The planet is on fire!’ is how it has felt in so many countries across the world this year. Everyone has been longing for the day when things change for the better. At Christian Action I am proud that this summer we held programs that promoted environmental conservation and waste prevention programs.
Organised by our Social Enterprise Department, and sponsored by the Wong Tai Sin District Council, the programs had over 1,000 participants!
Throughout June, we encouraged Wong Tai Sin residents to donate quality new or used clothes, accessories, toys, shoes, small appliances and housewares to our local collection points. The items were then upcycled. Some of the better items were resold to low-income families for a nominal fee, in Christian Action’s Community Sales Outlets! The program was also a huge win for the environment as it kept quality items out of Hong Kong’s landfills!
This summer we also held Green Barter Carnivals in San Po Kong and Wong Tai Sin! The Barter Carnivals are a vehicle for families to ‘trade’ (swap) their unwanted goods. The events were especially fun for the children, who learned how to obtain goods that they could not produce or afford to buy for themselves.
Another activity that was huge hit with the children were our upcycling workshops. The workshops taught, parents and children alike, how to make their own wind-chimes, piggy banks and other toys from everyday household trash like plastic bottles, beads and string.
I believe that we must all be the change that we wish to see in our world, and it needs to start today - not someday in the future. One way you can help us do this, is to drop-off your brand new or used items at our collection points. For more details please visit our website. Thank you!
