Mooncakes for Change!

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of Hong Kong's most significant festivals, a time to reunite with family and participate in exciting festivities such as mooncakes and lighting lanterns. But for those who live below the poverty line they are increasingly unable to afford the holiday because prices have increased so drastically.

To help the Kowloon East's elderly and underprivileged from missing out on the traditional celebration, Christian Action organised two wonderful Mid-Autumn events and invited 240 Kowloon East citizens. Dubbed the "Mid-Autumn Festival blessing our neighbors,” the first event was held on 2 September, 2024, at our CAC headquarters and celebrated the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's founding. Mr. Li Yong Zhan, Director of the Coordination Department at the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, was our honored guest and gave an inspirational address. The highlight of the afternoon was the "happy gift giving," during which the District Officers from the Kwun Tong and Wong Tai Sin districts gave each participant a 5-kg bag of rice and a mooncake.

Emma’s Joy

The visit to the Children’s Home was so powerful and meaningful. Their love for the children is so strong and it makes my heart so happy, to know Emma was loved and cared for so warmly from the moment she was placed at the Children’s Home. Your staff have done and continue to do amazing work, and we are so thankful that they took the time to be with us that day.

Nichole Baker

Thanks for specially arranging to visit Guangzhou, for a reunion!

In all my years as the Executive Director of Christian Action few things mean more to me than seeing our Qinghai children flourish. Emma Baker is a shining example of this. She is a gorgeous, radiant soul who I first wrote about in 2010 and 2014. This week I’d like to share an update!

Prevention is Better than Cure

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China's founding, Christian Action and the Hong Kong Health Care Alliance collaborated to provide a macular degeneration awareness seminar and eye examination event for the elderly residents of Wong Tai Sin District. The HKSAR Government estimates that by 2026 one in every three Hong Kong residents will be elderly. Prioritizing physical and emotional self-care practices will hopefully help the elderly learn how to preserve their eyesight.

The 5 Safeguards You Can Take Against Becoming Heartless

“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause" (Isaiah 1:17 ESV).

Did you catch the five magical verbs in those 17 words? We’re told to ‘learn, seek, correct, bring’ and ‘plead’. But why? And who is the beneficiary?

My life’s work has been spent with the ‘less’ in society: the ‘state-less’, the ‘human rights-less’, the ‘father-less’, the ‘husband-less’, the ‘sight-less’, and more. Why do we do this? Because it’s the right thing to do, because we should obey, and because of love.

Arise and Shine, Ladies

It is no secret that many women in Hong Kong live a life of quiet desperation. These are some of the most beautiful, powerful and self-sacrificial human beings that you will ever meet, and yet their selfless service has come at the expense of their own mental health.

In October 2023 Hong Kong’s SAR Government established the Women Empowerment Fund. It is designed to help this very needy segment of our population who are juggling jobs and family life, and to bring awareness to women's physical and mental health.

Ever since I began working at Christian Action, it has been my goal to help Hong Kong be more inclusive for women, so I was overjoyed when the Women Empowerment Fund was announced!
