Huang Luli Anne Heerkens’ Story

Rob and Anja Heerkens live in the Netherlands and adopted Luli from Xining Home in 2001 when she was two years old. I always make it a habit to keep in touch with all the children through their parents by sending yearly birthday and Christmas greetings. Join me to give thanks to God for Rob and Anja, who give Luli a forever family, shower her with unconditional love, and help her grow up in a nurturing environment. I have invited Anja to write about her lovely girl and I am so happy to share her reply with you!

With love,
Siew Mei

A Fundamental Truth

There are few things in life that compare to the blessing of having gainful employment. The lack of gainful employment is what leaves the unemployed and underemployed often feeling crushed, unseen and worthless. But with the right job that very same person’s enjoyment of life, their sense of self-worth, their contribution to their family, and their immediate community, all blossom. At Christian Action, we have seen this fundamental truth play out thousands upon thousands of times. And with each and every person we help, we use that experience to inform how we help the next person.

Christian Action plays a unique and critical role in the fabric of Hong Kong. We assist everyone from young, IT-savvy, school leavers who despair at the seeming lack of relevant, gainful jobs, to older workers who feel that life has passed them by and that the changing job market has relegated them to the sidelines.

CA Provides Transformational Experience for Youth

Earlier this year, our Lo Kwee Seong On Tai Service Centre and Maryknoll Secondary School collaborated for the first time. The "Act upon Your Heart,” outreach project aimed to foster compassion and bridge the gap between generations through house visits!

A total of 30 grassroots households of elderly singles or couples, were paired with a student and an On Tai House Captain Volunteer acting as their buddies, to help them during the visits. Each home was then visited twice. Prior to the outreaches, students were tutored in active listening, in how to express interest in the life stories of others, and identify key takeaways from the conversations. The students were encouraged to give a small, handmade gift to show their "small acts of love" to connect with the elderly.

A Lesson In Overcoming

Chen Quan became an orphan when he was just fourteen and both of his parents passed away. He says that he would dream of his parents and wished so hard that he could be with them again. When he awoke, he would find the pillow soaked in tears, his sense of abandonment was overwhelming. He wondered if he would ever escape from this darkness.

Quan’s life turned around when a place became available at the Hainan Children's Home. As a Tibetan native with limited Putonghua language skills, he initially lacked the confidence to talk to other children and felt unsure about everything at the Children's Home. After days of being showered in love and care from everyone in the home, Quan started to open up, to let go of his past pain and begin filling his heart, with the love he was given.

CA’s Use of Virtual Reality Helps Corporations Boost Teamwork

Imagine a world where learning is no longer confined to the four walls of a classroom but extends far beyond them.

Traditional training methods often appeal to only certain kinds of learners. Not only does it lack a broad-based appeal, but the limited interactivity means that the human brain is less stimulated. This kind of learning is ineffective because the depth and breadth of what is learned, put into practice, and retained is therefore suboptimal.

Christian Action’s trainings are different. Corporations that use our services receive customized courses that uses virtual reality (VR). This is making a huge difference for the individual attendees and entire teams!
