What is Cerebral Palsy?
What would you do if you visited a remote province in China only to find that no-one there has ever heard of Cerebral Palsy (CP)? And if the government then asked for your help with the disabled children in that province, how would you respond? That is what happened to me. We have been helping those children since 1997. This month I have a new and exciting project for Qinghai’s disabled children and I’d love your help!
Yongkang came to Xining Children’s Home when he was one year old. He has spastic cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, speech impairment and convulsion of the limbs. He communicates with facial expressions and a slight nod of the head, and he gets about in a wheelchair using his left hand. He is always upbeat and he has a smile that lights up the room.
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles.’ Source:CDC.
When Yongkang turned 18 he was moved to a Social Welfare Institute for adults. Because of his CP he has had a lifelong challenge with muscle tone. In addition to our other services in the Children’s Home, Christian Action has continued helping Yongkang live life to the fullest by providing daily physiotherapy and occupational therapy.
Two months ago we opened the new Xining Children’s Home so we can now help hundreds more children like Yongkang. We’re now working on a new and exciting project to build an Activity Room and Pottery Room in the Children’s Home! For just HK$130,520 (US$16,960) the rooms can be completed and all the right equipment purchased! Please read more here and give! Thank-you!
